Teacher Training
Introduction and Background

In 2001, Finland rose to prominence within the world Voice Teaching community through its hosting of the 5th International Congress of Voice Teachers in August. This country also has a strong association with Suzuki Voice.

Finland is where Suzuki Voice was founded by Dr. Päivi Kukkamäki.

Laura trained with Päivi and gained Advanced Accreditation Stage One.

The following is a summary of Dr Suzuki's philosophy that will be helpful in understanding the Suzuki Voice teaching approach.

Suzuki Philosophy

Environment – without an environment appropriate to the activity the children do not develop optimally.

Mother tongue – learning music can be done when approached with the realisation that it will happen more successfully through the use of the native language.

Parent Education – parents’ involvement is crucial. In my opinion it is not possible to teach children so young without educating the parent. Hence we have the parent/teacher/student triangle.

Talent Education – children’s talent has to be ‘educated’. Through this their character is built, and an appreciation of beauty develops.

Amateurs – Dr Suzuki wanted to create a generation of amateurs which literally means “great lovers“ of music. It was not his concern that all children become professional musicians.

Learning with Love – learning should be a pleasure; what better way to create such a response than to emphasise the love of music as essential?

"Music improves the human spirit and opens the heart”. Dr. Suzuki

Giving your child the gift of music does more for them than singing melodies - it helps them to develop as a human being in many ways.

The Practical Aspects

Teacher Training in Western Australia

The challenge of training to teach Suzuki Voice is a rewarding one. You will acquire knowledge of child development, emotional, mental, and physical as well as a broad knowledge of repertoire that children are capable of singing right into adulthood.

Teacher Training - Singing

The responsibility of a voice teacher working with young voices is great. Teachers considering undertaking the training for teaching in the Suzuki approach should make sure they feel comfortable with their own voice and work constantly on updating pedagogical knowledge. The joy derived from this work as a career makes it all worthwhile.
